Are you still floating on the surface or are you diving deeper into life? The more I dive into my truth and my creative craft as a photographer, I discover things that make me want to change the way I lead my entire life. Becoming aware of this is both scary and exciting. But fearful or not, it is the choices that we make that ultimately decide how our future turns out. We have the power to create whatever we want, right? But what do we want? That’s the clarity we must find first.
In 2012 I thought I was setting out to start my photography business leaving sunny Florida for sunny California. Within 2 years, the choices I made led me around the world on incredible adventures for almost another 2 years. Now here I am unexpectedly back in Florida and unexpectedly falling in love with photography in a whole new way.
After returning to the United States in late 2015, honestly, I felt so lost. I didn’t want to come back. I didn’t know how I would “settle down” and stay in one place. I didn’t know how I was going to “get back to work” and act like an American again. I didn’t know how to be the old me.
All of those unique experiences living overseas forced me to see life differently. To create a new future for myself. One I couldn’t have ever imagined when I started this business in 2012. But now I can. And it’s so clear. My mission has always been to capture visual stories that inspire everyone to see life through a new lens.
Now, I am diving deeper into this truth.
I am on a mission to capture stories that matter, to discover real hidden truths with my camera. By focusing on brand and lifestyle photography for conscious, mission-driven businesses, I am out to capture visual stories with passionate activists, eco-entrepreneurs, and those who are on a mission to create a positive impact on the world.
I’ve been “settling” into Orlando for almost 3 years now and as always, I’m in awe of the unexpected experiences I’ve had with and without my camera. They have all lead me to this moment, this next chapter in my deep dive. As I find my place within myself more and more, I know that no matter where I am, I am home. I will always be bitten by the travel bug, and I will always love feeling at home in Florida, especially as I expand my business.
Meditating every morning has also made me feel more clear about my purpose. With that clarity new creative ideas keep pouring in; and while my mind and ego are excited to jump into every great opportunity that comes my way, I know what’s more important is to dive deeper into just a few ideas, or dare I say just one. If I juggle every opportunity that comes my way, I end up staying on the surface. I just dip my toes in and give each idea just a little bit of attention, a little bit of effort, a little bit of time. Then I just hope for the best. That’s how we all end up living on the surface without knowing what lies beneath.
What’s much more challenging but incredibly rewarding, is actually putting a great deal of attention and energy into a single idea with the dedication to see it through. To do this we must dive deeper into what matters to us most. This is difficult because it forces us to clarify our morals and values. It forces us to not just face our fears but embrace them so we can stand for something bigger than ourselves. It forces us to dive deeper into all of life and actually care, fully about the things we do.
This isn’t about asking the question, “what do I want?” It’s about asking the question, “what do I want to become?” It is at this threshold of conditioned unconscious habits and expanding awareness, that we are all seeking a deeper truth. How far am I willing to go? How much do I care? How valuable is this to me? What am I really creating with my life?
Diving Into Our Powers
When we can step back and assess our choices, we can be open to continually learning to become more conscious of everything we do. This is the mark of a free-diver. Someone who is willing to leave the surface, and dive deep. That’s what I am setting out to do, dive deep. I am becoming more aware of my power as a not only as a professional photographer but as a conscious human being with the power of this tool at my fingertips. Now that photography is infused in everything we do, I believe it’s time for a shift in human consciousness. It is time for us all to harness the power we have as natural storytellers to capture and share images of truth, not just fake highlight reels.
The amount of energy and time humanity has put into creating the online world in less than 30 years is astounding. I am 31 years old. I will get to say I saw it from the beginning. We all will if we want to see a better future for our planet. We are living in an age of accelerations and we must wake up. We must use our powers to become the change we want to see for our future.
But to do this, we must trek into unknown waters with daring audacity, trust our instincts and allow curiosity and creativity lead the way. We must let our fears and our desires stand side by side. We must be willing to honestly open up and admit a universal truth: This is a whole new world, with all new territories, and we are all beginners. We are all just learning to become free-divers in the age of accelerations.
