“A community fruit tree is a publicly owned fruit tree that is easily accessible for anyone to pick from.”
Planting over 100 fruit trees in the Audubon Garden District of Orlando Florida has a variety of short-term and long-term benefits. The first major benefit that I bared witness too was the act of strangers, neighbors, and new community members connecting and gathering to volunteer and give their time and service to help their community.
On day one the team loaded buckets in trucks full of donated compost and manure. They organized hundreds of potted fruit trees and plants putting them into other vehicles to then drive around the community to homes who had already volunteered their yards (and their responsibility) for these communities fruit trees.
By the end of day one we were soaking wet from the typical afternoon tropical storms but I don’t think any of us would have had it any other way. Each of us had such a blast getting to know each other and learning all about the different trees. But this was just the beginning.
Which brings me to one of the best long-term benefits of this amazing mission-driven story. These fruit trees will take up to four years to bear fruit and during that time these boys will be responsible for taking care of these trees in their yard. I know they will do so proudly because these children have learned about the bigger picture. The long-term purpose. The reason why Rob wanted to plant these trees in the first place:
“We may not enjoy them in the next few years… but hundreds or even thousands of people will enjoy fresh fruit from these trees over many years to come. I want to help people realize that food can grow free right where we walk every day. I want to create opportunities for people to see that the food on the shelf at the grocery store is barely scratching the surface of what real flavor and nutrition can be when we do some work in our own yards and neighborhoods.” – Rob Greenfield
Once again I am proud to say that these photographs aren’t just about giving my clients great images. These images tell a beautiful mission-driven story. A story by a humanitarian who is inspiring us all to take action and become a change we want to see in the world.
