“Sophie Moss is a USA Today bestselling and multi-award winning author. She is known for her captivating Irish fantasy romances and heartwarming contemporary romances with realistic characters and unique island settings.
As a former journalist, Sophie has been writing professionally for over ten years. Sophie lives in Maryland, where she’s working on her next novel. When she’s not writing, she’s testing out a new dessert recipe, exploring the Chesapeake Bay, or working in her garden.”
That’s what the web says about this fresh face anyway! But when Sophie signed up for one of my photography classes last summer, I had no idea we would relate on a much bigger level.
As a natural storyteller, Sophie writes beautiful novels for a living. I too am a natural storyteller, but unlike Sophie’s stories, my stories are translated through visual images, not with words. But, neither of us knew that our natural storytelling abilities would soon collide again and create a story like this!
If you have attended any of my photography classes, you know that I am more passionate about your story than your ability to use your camera. This is because our stories are what matter most. If we don’t know what story we want to share, we can’t possibly create an image worth capturing.
Little did Sophie know that the Visual Storytelling class she was attending would emphasize this idea even more. In this class, we describe our main subject as the hero of our story. We build awareness as we set the scene and analyze the light. We hone in and focus on one particular part, the part of the story that connects to our emotions and feelings. All of this relates to storytelling just as much as it does photography. After class, Sophie explained that she learned something new that day; that capturing a great visual story is just like capturing a great story with words.
It starts with a vision, an intention, then you let the story unfold before you. You let curiosity and creativity lead the way. No matter if your tool is a pen or a camera, this is how a great story is brought to life.
A year after attending the class, Sophie has finished her final book in a series and is feverishly writing her next. So it seems fitting to capture her at this new stage in her creative journey. Both local natives to the Eastern Shore of Maryland, we truly enjoyed the magical moments of this photo session on the docks. The light was just phenomenal. We couldn’t ask for anything better, especially considering it was February in Maryland.
As the sun set over the icy waters of the Chesapeake Bay, Sophie kept turning around to get a glimpse of her background for these headshots. At one point, she even ran back to her car in the middle of a pose to get her phone so she too could capture the sunset. I guess, that photo class is still inspiring her to keep sharing visual stories too!
We often take for granted the beauty of a simple experience like the sunset. But it’s times like this, with new friends like this, that sometimes we remember to pause, smile, and just watch our breath fade into the air while we take it all in. Because we know, light like this and nights like this… don’t last forever!
Absolutely loved my headshot session with Danielle! She made me feel comfortable, knew exactly where/when to shoot to capture the feel I was looking for, and even gave me a few photo tips during the session!
I also took a private Skype photography lesson from her after I’d had a chance to practice with the camera for a bit and that was so helpful. I will definitely be taking more photography classes from her and hiring her for future photo sessions when I need an updated shot!
