Are you familiar with the daily life of a small business owner? It’s a juggling act to balance not just personal and work life, but the roles we play within our businesses too. There seems to be a constant feeling of urgency and struggle as we do our best to accomplish as much as we can on any given day. And what happens when we can’t get it all done? We feel overwhelmed, unaccomplished and uninspired for the next day.
If you are living this new entrepreneurial lifestyle while trying to maintain some sanity, you know exactly what I am talking about. That feeling of urgency leads to us making quick hasty decisions. We just want to check that off our list so we can move on to the next thing. Even worse, sometimes, it makes us just want to give up altogether because we’re overwhelmed and there is no inspiration leading us anywhere.
When we go for a quick fix in the short term, we don’t have clarity on how it will affect us in the long-term. We lose sight of what’s most important, our end goal, our reason for doing what we’re doing in the first place.
We lose focus, clarity.
It is far too easy to lose sight of our light at the end of the tunnel when there is no real inspiration to keep our business dreams fueled. We’ve all been there. With no clear direction on the “Big Picture” – your inspiration – our daily decisions (or little pictures) lose their real purpose too. When you have true clarity on your inspiration, you will create what’s called a Brand Story. A Brand Story is the ultimate driving force behind any successful business. And it can be your driving force too, as soon as you create the real clarity you need to share it with passion and purpose.
When you have a clear purpose that fuels what you want to do, how you want to build your business, and ultimately how to lead your life, everything in your daily todo’s becomes easier to manage too. By clarifying your what your “Big Picture” looks like, all the little pictures become more in focus too.
Lately, in business, there’s a single driving force that has helped me redirect my focus and create serious clarity. This one tool has single-handedly helped me stay focused on my big picture no matter what I’m working on at any given moment in a day.
But to find that clarity I had to understand this truth as a business owner…
Whether you like it or not, your business is a brand. Thanks to the wonderful internet, now more than ever, our businesses are out there in the world connecting and creating traction every second of the day. Think about all the places your business is represented in the world today.
Every product, service, storefront, sign, logo, tagline, slogan, color… Every promise, image, graphic, promotion, website, blog post, social media post… Every conversation… every idea… every word… IS YOUR BRAND.
If you could create one simple message that clearly defines everything at once, that is your brand story. The bottom line is this. Our long-term success lies in the clarity of our brand story. It lies within your real inspiration. You have to discover it and bring it to life.
If we can all get this straight, we can stop worrying about the daily todos so much and enjoy focusing on why we so passionately went into business for ourselves in the first place. To create something unique. To offer our talents to the world in a way that no one else can. I don’t care if you run a business or not, you are human and that’s what we’re all here to do.
Having this clarity has given me more peace of mind than I ever thought possible in business and in life. I’ve realized it’s literally the driving force behind any successful business. This tool has been the one thing that’s helped me discover my brand story AND keep it in focus every single day. It’s more than just some marketing tactic. It is a game changer in business altogether.
I’ve been steadily building a photography business for years. But up until recently, I didn’t really know the key factors that we’re triggering real growth and success. I just struggled every day, pushing through the mud, and hoping to make it out on the other side alive – all while telling myself – this is what it takes! This is what I have to do to make my business succeed. Take every offer, say yes to every client, do whatever it takes to make a buck!
What I’ve come to understand is that there is something deep inside of me that is fueling my success. It’s the authentic story that my brand tells. I am not succeeding as a professional photographer simply because I take great photos. Lots of people do! I am succeeding because I have authentically and clearly voiced to myself and now the world, what my purpose is.
Now I want to help you do the same! I’m now clear that part of my service as a storyteller and a visual artist to help you understand your brand and design a story that exudes everything you imagine it to be. I want to help you discover your brand story and share it with passion and purpose.
To create the best version of yourself, you have to take a step back from you’re daily todos and getting a fresh new perspective on the message you and your brand are putting out in the world. Are you ready to do that?
Ok then. You may proceed…
It’s what you can focus on when you feel everything else urgently pulling you in different directions as you juggle the roles of a small business owner. It has become a catalyst for true clarity in my business and ultimately in understanding and sharing the service I’m here to provide my customers. I know it can help you do the same.
Are you ready to really create a solid brand story you can share with passion and purpose – anytime you are marketing your business? This tool is all you need to get started. It’s called the StoryBrand Framework. The StoryBrand Framework is something that I first learned about when reading the book, “Building a StoryBrand: Clarify Your Message So Customers Will Listen” by Donald Miller. I loved reading this book even more than usual because it offers tons of practical advice that I was able to implement into my business right away. All with the use of this one simple tool. The Brandscript below is the framework you can use to develop your ideal brand story. The best part is that it’s really easy to remember.
has a problem…
and meets a guide…
who gives them a plan…
and calls them to action…
that ends in success…
and helps avoid failure…
creating character transformation.
Easy, right? Okay, so maybe it doesn’t sound so easy. Let’s break it down and look at one step at a time. As you read each section of the framework, try to imagine your brand and the story you’re customers create. Notice how it may evolve instantly.
- Character – Who is your ideal customer? They are the HERO of your story.
- Problem – Who is the villain in the story and what problems to do they cause?
- Guide – This is YOU & YOUR BRAND! You are NOT the hero. You are the GUIDE.
- Plan – What simple plan can you as the guide, offer your character?
- Call To Action – How can you challenge the character to take action now?
- Leads To Success – What is the positive outcome if they take the challenge?
- Avoids Failure – How your product help them avoid failure?
- Transformation – What does their life look like after they succeed?
That’s it! Simply overlap your business as the guide and your customer as the hero of the story. Kinda, cool right? Now the book of course goes into tons and tons of great details. Some of which are quite intriguing and relate to the obvious Hollywood style tales of Luke Skywalker and Yoda and all the other heroic stories that captured not just audiences attention. These stories have captured our hearts for generations and generations.
I totally recommend picking up a copy of the book and taking amble notes. I sure did! But even if you just read the 8 steps to the StoryBrand script above, can’t you see the dramatic difference already?
Do you see how your brand message can become more clear, and as you implement it into all aspects of your business? Your Brand Story should infiltrate your marketing, you’re sales, you’re visuals, you’re conversations – all of it. You can use this script to develop literally anything at all. I mean it. Start with the main message then use this script anytime to…
- Write A Presentation
- Create A Website
- Design An Marketing Campaign
- Talk To Potential Customers
- Network at An Event
- Sell A New Product or Service
- Even to Write A Book!
Now more than ever it’s easy to offer my products and services with more confidence, especially knowing that I am the guide and my customer is the hero. The StoryBrand Framework is the most powerful and robust tool I’ve ever seen to help clarify the message you want your customers to hear. I’m starting to think of it as my field guide to rate every aspect of the business. And what I’m realizing is, that the more I dive deep into this script, the more my business does what it’s supposed to do – sell itself. All I have to do is keep sharing my brand story with passion and purpose.
So, have you thought about how your business fits into this brand story script? Would you like some help? You can pick my brain by adding your questions and thoughts below in the comments. I’m still working on mine and plan on having it reeled in by next week for the big event.
