Have you ever read a book so many times, you feel like you wrote it? I called this book my bible for a few years, I loved it so much. Now as I reflect on the books that have truly changed my life, I am remembering the power this particular book had over me.
Books tend to do that when we let them. Doesn’t everything? When we dive deep into something that truly interests us, we build on our curiosities and start to let ourselves learn from that something, it takes power over us. It changes us and brings us to a whole new level of seeing life through a new lens.
The War of Art by Steven Pressfield did this to me back in 2013. I’d never heard of the author or the book but in that summer, it came into my life many times over. So at some point, we have to read the signs and take a leap of faith. I bought the book, paperback, so I could write in it. I’ve always loved learning. But of course, only when it interests me. After many dogeared tabs, smeared pen marks, and faded yellow highlighter marks scorned the pages of this non-fiction, I’ve come back to it time and time again and it never gets old.
This book is not to be confused with the Art of War. A massive text on basically the opposite of Pressfield’s book. No, the War of ART is about the war inside our heads. The war about our creativity and our abilities, and our confidence in them.
Pressfield is the author of The Legend of Bagger Vance, the one and only best-selling golf novel. He himself has a very interesting story not necessarily in that novel but in his real life. How do I know Pressfield’s story? Because he writes about it in my bible, I mean in The War of Art. You see Pressfield always considered himself to be a novelist. A fiction writer. A mind of the imagination. The War of Art is a non-fiction, self-improvement book about HOW to discover your imagination. Yet, it took him years to come to the realization that he had the power to write this book. It’s also become a best seller and I’m sure helped millions of people just like me. Now! I want to share it with you in hopes that it will help you battle the wars of confidence, creativity, and your connection with yourself.
He has a great story and he is sharing it in this book. He is sharing it after discovering full self-awareness, the most important first step to anything great in life.
He shares his story because he finds the confidence and desire to share it, through self-realization. He sees the power in sharing his own story to help others so that it can be not only a reflection for him but for the rest of humanity to learn from and grow from as well.
I urge you to dive deep and start discovering your truth. If you’re one to already be on that path, let this book take you even deeper. If you feel you are at the beginning of your creative journey, start here. And know that everyone is at the beginning. This book is a beautiful copilot to encourage your journey. It has helped me so much and now I want to share it with you.
Now is the time to make our stories be heard from within. Now is the time to find full self-awareness. Now is the time to discover ourselves and invite that self, that imagination, that diversity to center stage. Because it is our individual beautiful stories that will change the world. Read this and then begin. And share your thoughts with me here. I’d love to know how this book has helped you, or if any others have had such a profound purpose in your life, share that book too!
