Photography is everyone’s creative outlet. It’s our key to unlocking all of our diverse creativity. But let’s just talk about this for a minute. If it is true that we are all unique and our diversity is what we are here to discover, how is that one creative key can unlock our individual doors of creativity?
Put another way,
How does the simple act of creating a photo show us to be more creative in life?
Here’s what I know. We are visual creatures. We are storytellers. So it’s quite obvious that visual storytelling is a perfect way for human beings to understand and connect to our world and ourselves within it. We already have the desires to capture our experiences. I’m simply stating that by choosing to take creative control of that desire, we can begin to expand our creative consciousness in every aspect of life.
By creating our visual stories with more self-awareness, I know we all have the power to unlock so much more creativity that’s buried deep inside all of us. How do I know? Because it happens to me, every single time I pick up the camera. The experiences and stories I have created in my life (and will continue to create) are nothing short of amazing to many people. It’s taken me a while to clearly see the impact they have had on me.
Photography Helps Me See Life Through A New Lens Everyday
Now I am openly sharing them here on the blog and currently at a gallery exhibit in Winter Park, Florida. Through divine serendipity, I was given an opportunity to see my own life through a new lens, again. Showcasing a collection of ten landscape images from adventures around the world, they are infused with a mysterious story as well. With each image comes a recorded story of my adventure at that moment. One that isn’t just about the place. It’s about the experience, the feeling, the life that lived through that moment in time.
Writing these stories didn’t just bring back great memories, it brought true clarity for me. It reminded me how my experiences in travel, photography, and self-discovery all have led me to this place. A place where I love creating new and unimaginable things and I fear just a little less in this unknown state of creativity.
This instant art has taught me so much about myself. Photography is a beautiful metaphor for life. All of the creative aspects of this art and the act of creating and capturing an interesting image, are exact reflections of our life experiences. These are the moments we choose to hold on to. The moments that show us what matters and how we see the world.
For instance, let’s examine the term Perspective.
Perspective is the ultimate storytelling asset. It’s the one asset that doesn’t really need to be taught. You already understand perspective, because your reality is your perspective. Our perspectives are exactly what makes us unique and different. The same is true in photography. Many people can look at the same scene and want to capture the same moment. But each one of us has a unique perspective of that story that will make our visual stories completely different. We can learn from this simple truth. We can actively choose to explore other perspectives as we are practicing our photography skills. And we can actively choose to explore other perspectives on life experiences that aren’t behind the camera too.
There are limitless possibilities in the world of perspective. Many different compositional techniques have been used for centuries to create visual stories, in all kinds of art forms. Not only does photography require such techniques as “leading lines”, and “rule of thirds”, “symmetry”, “direction of sight”, etc, so does painting, and sculpting and even written word as well. All of these techniques are very easy to understand once they are learned, simply because they represent exactly how we naturally share and connect our stories in real life.
Unlock Your Creativity With Photography
With this powerful tool at our fingertips, I know by focusing our attention on the act of creative storytelling, every time we pick up the camera, we will inherently build self-awareness and have the desire to create real authentic stories.
We have the power to unlock such much more creative power simply by seeing the stories of our lives and capturing them with more self-awareness and with a more purpose-driven outcome, we are opening ourselves up to limitless possibilities. To curiosities and interests that we may not have known before.
So if you are at all seeking some sort of creative outlet, or you aren’t sure if you are creative enough, or you just aren’t sure about anything, I urge you to pick up the camera. I urge you to step outside of your mind and allow this creative tool to help you unlock your own creative potential. Begin to trust your instincts and follow that deep inner feeling of curiosity, and tell your story with a true purpose.
When you are creating an image before you press that shutter, take a moment to consider what you are creating and what you want to create. Not only at this moment but at every moment in life. Become fully aware of your surroundings and the story you want to tell.
When we do this we can take what we experience from capturing an image, and learn from those moments to let them reflect throughout the rest of our experiences. We can become more curious about other perspectives. We can compose our images and our stories with more intention. We can find symmetry and balance in life, even if life feels off balance. We can see the beauty in everyday things. We can begin to see life through a new lens.
