This may seem like a redundant question. That’s because it is, and it isn’t. No matter how long or how often we reflect on our lives, self-awareness seems to be a fleeting concept that many have very little understanding of today. I myself and just beginning to find real clarity as I dive deeper into this subject.
First, let me say that I became interested in this subject simply because I became interested. As a creative entrepreneur, I have a deep appreciation for the ever-growing technology that is all around us. So I simply became curious, and started researching. Why did I become curious? How did this subject come into my perspective? What about this subject interests me?
All great questions – but these are questions of the mind. The first thing I’ve learned about self-awareness is that it doesn’t actually start in the mind. It starts in the body. With further research, I realized more and more, all the information out there can not fully describe and therefore completely define the answers my mind wants.
A Paradox Of Thinking
The paradox continues as I “think” I am becoming more and more aware of myself as I spend time each morning meditating. There are the constant ebbs and flows of our choices in physical reality, the mind racing, and the infusion of the two at once. When we describe the self and the ego, we tend to fixate on the contrast of their definitions so as to better understand them in the place of reality. But the reality is, as we become more self-aware, we see that they are two sides of the same coin, their contrasts cannot exist without their connection. The ego is merely a manifestation of the self. Becoming aware, allows you to see both sides of this coin, at the same time.
Your self, your soul, the inner you, (what is only love and joy) can only manifest itself through the ego, that is the physical reality. We need our ego to give us clues, show us what we’re interested in, drive us towards our personal evolution, this is our outer journey through the experiences of life. Our inner journey is all the same. Discover our personal powers by going within, trusting our truths, and the love that is deep inside, the light that connects each and every living creature on this planet.
Self-awareness is so important simply because it lets these extremes be seen all at once. We are so small. We are so powerful. We are so intelligent. We are so ignorant. We must learn to fully be aware of all of these aspects of life if we are going to create lasting joy on our journeys.
The Clogged Mind Cannot Be Self-Aware
When we don’t have self-awareness, we allow our minds to run the show. This is when stress and anxiety show up. This is when we can’t seem to slow down. This is when we are so stuck in our mind, in our thoughts, we cannot clearly see how clogged it is. We can not see our obvious truths and trust them. We can not bow down to our ignorance and accept. Without self-awareness, we have no true inner journey, therefore whatever outer journey we are on, has no purpose.
Let’s go there for a minute and get over the cliches. Everyone is talking about finding your passion. Doing what you love. Yada, yada, yada. But hey! That’s not always easy if you don’t feel like you’ve ever been given the chance to discover anything about yourself. If your life has been wrapped in constant stress or pressure, how can you ever feel joyful about not only finding but then pursuing your passions with confidence.
If you’ve ever had moments or even lifetimes of feeling uncreative, you know what I mean. If your life has NEVER felt creative or know you aren’t one to let your imagination run wild, know this fact: This is NOT about discovering your passion. This is about being passionate in any discovery.
When we start from a place of self-awareness, we start at ground zero, at home, centered and aligned with whatever feels real to us right now. That is, what feels right in our physical reality and in our mind’s perspective of it.
Self-awareness is about the pursuit of you and the pursuit of your ego. It’s about becoming aware that you are both. That you need both to not only survive, but thrive. The journey of self-awareness is about the journey to many different destinations.
My Personal Journey Through Self-Awareness
I’ve recently begun practicing many different aspects of self-awareness. At first, I was focusing on something that I thought was necessary. I was trying to distinguish the difference between thought patterns, emotions, and my reactions as they relate to my experiences throughout the day. Considering these elements of my life have definitely made me more aware of things. But this isn’t the level of self-awareness I now realize matters most. Reflecting to come to an analytical answer is not nearly as important as I thought. Thought it does have its place in the process. But here’s the thing, when we are beginning, we can’t think so much!
It’s actually much easier than that. To begin strengthening my self-awareness, I learned, I just have to start building that muscle. And let’s be clear, this is not just the mind muscle we’re trying to strengthen, this is the full body awareness muscle.
Just like with any other muscle we want to build, we have to practice to build our full body awareness muscle. We have to become more in tune with our entire body and how it is existing to us, including our mind. As we become more physically aware of our body, how it feels, and what it’s focused on, we can begin to truly find self-awareness.
As of now, life is not ever going to be like it was in the past. Every single day we will wake up to a new world, a new technology, a new something pulling us into the future.
Are we ready?
Are we truly self-aware of what we are doing?
Who we are being?
How we are creating in our short time here on Earth?
Everyone on this planet has the right to ask these questions now and the power to discover their own answers, to create their own answers. Every single human being now gets to play the game. We all have a uniqueness that must be discovered, these are not passions. These are simply individual qualities that not only make us different, but they also make us diversely powerful.
When we can allow ourselves to trust our diversity, we can connect with far more power than we are now. Everyone has something creative to share with the world. And now we all have the power to live on purpose. To strive past survival mode and into a mode of constant thriving. This is the ideal way to create an interesting life, is it not? Our individual contributions to the global society will continue to create that thriving future. Contribution starts with self-awareness. Everything else is secondary. Those who are contributing to their power, are self-aware and becoming more and more so every day.
If you are here, you are contributing. If you are searching for something. Start by searching within. Start with self-awareness. Every day begin to build your full body awareness muscle and watch the discoveries unfold.
